A few weeks ago, we decided to spend an hour or so wasting time and money by roaming around CostCo. We do things like this occasionally. It's like we just want to see the variety of strange and wonderful things that are for sale in this country. Think of it as similar to visiting a bazaar or market in a foreign country, just a lot more lame.
We had managed to fill the cart with a surprising amount of things that we REALLY needed [hah], and were touring the isle with the pastas and rice and such in it, when we spotted an interesting-looking bag on the shelf. "Aztec superfood" it said, along with a bunch of other lofty health claims. It was curious, packaged appealingly, and we were in the mood to spend so it ended up in the cart too. We did our part to support the economy that day.
Since then, we discovered [by reading the packaging] that the stuff is not meant to be cooked up like quinoa, as we had originally thought. The package suggests that you sprinkle it on things, or mix it into things, and if you want to, you can bake it into things. This mystery food looks like itsy bitsy seeds. They're smooth, kindof pretty, and seem to be variegated in a wide variety of colors. See figure 1. Of course, in seeing figure 1, a bunch of you are going to say "oh, I know what that is". Anywho, I've been experimentally sprinking the little guys on salads, on my yoghurt, etc. They have a pleasantly mild flavor, but turn into this gelatinous mass if you "lose" one in your mouth [good material for the "flavor savors"].
Moving forward in time, Andrew bought a total impulse item today at Walgreen's. A Shrek Chiapet. He thought Riley would get a big kick out of it, because Shrek is his favorite movie. True to form, Riley was super excited. Andrew soaked the pot, and the chia stuff, as directed. I was wondering to myself what kind of seeds they were, and how we could get more [probably on Amazon].
At this time, I came out into the kitchen, and had a look at the stuff soaking. I looked at Andrew, and said something to the effect of "Are you kidding me?" I knew those seeds. I opened the bag of mystery Aztec food, and pulled some out. We compared. Refer again to Figure 1. We gave each other a big grin, and simultaneously thought "Aha! We have them now! We figured out how the Chia guys do it! We've put one over on the MAN." Yes, we felt very
smart.
And then Andrew's face suddenly lost its triumphant glow. He pointed to the bag of magic Aztec food sitting on the counter. Refer to figure 2.
Figure 2. The evidence of our total stoopidity.
Yes, we're college professors. We used to be able to read, and absorb information.
I am happy to report, that Shrek has been anointed with the wonder food of the Aztecs. And that we have a 2lb supply of reseeding material, easily found at CostCo. Refer to figure 3. I put that glop of Aztec magic under his nose, hoping it would grow and look like a big bogie.
